Mrs. Margaret Sweatman (Grace ‘25, Ryan ‘26, Kate ‘29) has loved sports her whole life. From playing sports with her many siblings during childhood, she served as the captain of her high school soccer, basketball, and track teams. In college, she played rugby competitively, continuing after graduation for a team in Washington, D.C., alongside Gaelic football. Since then she has competed as a CrossFit athlete for several years in adulthood.
With her own athletic knowledge and affection for sports, she now brings an excitement for the Oakcrest athletic programs as Middle School Athletic Director.
“My love for sport and how physical strength complements moral strength makes this the ideal position for me,” she said. “I am very passionate about the role physical fitness plays in a young girl and how that takes her through womanhood.”
She sees the Oakcrest athletic programs as an extension of how the school seeks to instill virtue in its students.
“Oakcrest’s mission of cultivating virtues in our daughters extends from the classroom to our courts, fields, and pools,” Mrs. Sweatman explains. “Oakcrest educates the whole person. Sports allow our daughters to experience challenges and teamwork in a unique and beautiful way that transforms their confidence into strength.”
Working alongside Upper School Athletic Director Ms. Caroline Heeter ‘97, Mrs. Sweatman oversees the Oakcrest athletic program, particularly the 11 Middle School athletic team offerings. More than 85% of students participate in a team or athletic training.
As Mrs. Sweatman builds her coaching staff and teams, she seeks to ensure that the students are provided with quality instruction and the capacity to grow. She sees that the strength of the Middle School program is a direct support to the students as they grow into varsity level competition.
“I am the advocate for each athlete to have the platform that they need to learn their potential and to excel on any given team,” she explained.
One of Mrs. Sweatman’s favorite quotes is attributed to St. Augustine: “Take care of your body as if you are going to live forever, take care of your soul as if you are going to die tomorrow.”
Through time management, sacrifice, and accountability, we are forming young women in the discipline of athletics. Mrs. Sweatman said she believes that “our athletic teams can help elevate our students to be who they are meant to be.”
