Following a tremendous audition with 131 violinists, Colette (“Coco”) P. ‘28 was selected for the Honors Orchestra. Remarkably, she was seated first chair and named the concertmaster for the entire event, which took place on Friday, January 10.
“This would be an impressive achievement for any student, but it is extraordinary for a student of her age,” Oakcrest Instrumental Director Alix Baldwin enthusiastically explained. “Fairfax County – especially Districts XI and XII – is well known internationally for its music programs, so this is an event of some distinction,” Baldwin said. “The countless hours of preparation and hard work that Coco has done is truly impressive.”
Oakcrest also congratulates students Aline T. ‘28 and Madeline S. ‘26, who were selected by audition to participate in the District XII Honors Chorus concert taking place on February 10, 2025 at Herndon High School in Virginia. The event will be led by esteemed guest conductors, and students will perform music at a very high level in concert. These students are now eligible to audition for the Virginia All-State Chorus in April.
Aline T. ‘28 will participate in the Treble Chorus, and Madeline S. ‘26 will participate in the mixed chorus. “Both singers are to be commended for their dedication to the choral art and their high achievement, which earned them a spot in this prestigious event,” said Oakcrest Choral Director Jessica Irish.
Reflecting on her experience in the competition, Madeline extended words of appreciation for her Oakcrest teachers and the role they have played in her musical journey. “They are so supportive and encouraging,” Madeline said. “[They] push us with more difficult pieces and inspire us to rise to the occasion. The music program at Oakcrest has opened up numerous opportunities for musicians to foster their love of music,” Madeline continued. For example, “Liturgical Choir is another setting I’ve enjoyed because it is a way to serve God through the musical gift He gave us.”
Last but certainly not least, it was announced that Oakcrest student Cece P. ‘29 has been selected for District XII Band. She placed second out of 51 trumpet students and will be seated as second chair. “She was also accepted to the National Trumpet Competition, which is an extremely competitive nationwide event,” Baldwin added.
The entire Oakcrest community is very proud of these talented and dedicated student musicians.
