Shakespeare is one of the greatest and most important writers, and his beautiful poetry, in our own English language, will enrich our soul, heart, and mind, in a relaxed summertime atmosphere. This class will consist of reading two plays (outside of the Oakcrest curriculum: one tragedy and one comedy) together aloud, analyzing the plays through small seminars, informal writing reflections, performing scenes, watching films, and viewing a performance of a Shakespeare play at the newly renovated Folger in DC and/or The Blackfriars in Staunton, VA, which is one of the most famous Shakespeare playhouses in America. This Shakespeare class is inspired by Mrs. Kenna’s transformative Shakespeare class abroad last summer in Rome, Italy at the University of Dallas Rome Campus with some of the best Shakespeare scholars as her professors. The study of Shakespeare will allow students to contemplate both tragedy and comedy in trying to understand human nature through the different characters’ failures and triumphs.
Participants should bring a large water bottle, snack, and lunch each day.
