Gigi R. '27 performs in local opera

For Gigi R. ’27, entering the world of the opera was a quick, but natural leap. In early April, Gigi, at the recommendation of her voice teacher, auditioned for the Loudoun Lyric Opera Company’s production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, The Magic Flute. After a whirlwind three weeks of rehearsals, Gigi sang the role of Spirit One for two performance weekends in May.

Being surrounded by world-class singers, some of whom have even performed with the Metropolitan Opera, was an incredible opportunity, Gigi said, adding that “it was so impressive to hear and learn from them.”

In her role as Spirit One, Gigi, along with two other spirits, opened and closed the performance, guiding the story through song. “It was our role to lead (the other characters) and help them on their journey,” Gigi said. “In a way (our characters) orchestrated the whole show.”

For the Loudoun Lyric Opera, the production of The Magic Flute was the first time they opened casting to younger students, and Gigi said this was the sort of opportunity she hopes to continue to take in the future. “The experience really helped me with my singing,” she explained. “Reading the music as we were going and working with other artists, I really saw myself improve.”

Gigi performed alongside Oakcrest alumna Madeline Manaker ’12 who played the role of “The Third Lady.”

One takeaway Gigi said she was impressed by throughout her experience was how the cast came together in the midst of their different backgrounds and views to appreciate both the classical music and the western tradition of performance found within the work. “We all had completely different views, but we loved the arts and the richness of the traditions within the show,” she said.
